Grok Bot vs Hermes Agent: Which Should You Use in 2026?
Grok Bot from xAI is the easiest AI agent to set up. Hermes Agent is cheaper and far more flexible. I tested both; here is where each one wins.

Grok Bot is the faster one to set up, and Hermes Agent is the one I keep using. Grok Bot, from xAI, gives you a clean app with ready-made agents, cloud hosting, and a mobile app, and I had a chief of staff, a researcher and a coder talking to each other within minutes. Then it stopped my build and asked for a $200 a month plan before it would finish. Hermes takes more setup, but it runs on any model, costs whatever you choose, and gives your agents more tools.
I recorded the whole test, including the moment it ran out of credits. You can watch the full walkthrough. Here is what I found.
What Grok Bot is
Grok Bot is a new AI agent product from xAI, Elon Musk's AI company, built as part of Cursor after xAI acquired it. It competes with the other agent platforms: OpenClaw, Hermes, Claude, Codex. It runs on Windows, and it has an iOS app, which is unusual. With Hermes you typically talk to your agent through Telegram; with Grok Bot you have a native app.
Everything is hosted in the cloud by xAI. You do not manage a machine, and you do not host anything yourself. The interface is built to make creating agents very easy, and it does.
Setting up agents in Grok Bot
When you log in, the bottom of the screen lists suggested bots you can create with a click: an invoice chaser, a QA engineer, a deck designer using Google Workspace, an expense auditor with QuickBooks, a subscription sleuth, a dashboard watcher, a night shift bot, inbox triage, and a chief of staff. Some of those are jobs I have been building by hand in Hermes, like the invoice follow-up agent.
I created a chief of staff first. It introduced itself: it would keep the other bots pointed in the right direction and only pull me in when a real decision was needed. Then I created two more.
- A builder. I said I wanted it doing coding and deploys. Grok Bot asked whether to connect GitHub, offered the options itself so I did not have to type them, and asked for a GitHub personal access token. I pasted one in and GitHub was connected. I named the bot Cody.
- A researcher. Named Ralph. Research was, in its words, right in its wheelhouse.
One detail impressed me. You can click into a bot and see its screen: the virtual machine the agent is working in. Watching Cody's environment live is a very good way to understand what an agent is doing.
Then I asked the chief of staff to have Ralph research how to build a Flappy Bird style mobile game and have Cody build it. Ralph researched and wrote a brief. The chief of staff handed it to Cody with a working title that avoided the trademark. Cody put the scaffolding together and said it would ping me when the game was playable.
Where the Grok Bot test stopped
It never got there. The account ran out of credits mid-build, and the app asked me to upgrade to the Ultra subscription at $200 a month before it would continue. I was not willing to pay that to see whether a demo game worked, so the test ended without a finished product.
That was the main disappointment. The free plan let me set everything up, but not finish anything.
Where Grok Bot wins
Being fair, there is a lot here.
- Fastest setup I have seen. Suggested bots, guided questions, connectors that pull themselves in. If you want an agent running out of the box today, Grok Bot wins that.
- Mobile apps. iOS and Android. No Telegram bridge.
- No hosting. xAI runs it in the cloud, so there is nothing to keep alive on your machine.
- A simple, clean interface. You are chatting with your agents right away, and you can see their screens.
If you are not technical and you just want to try agents, this is the easiest door in.
Where Hermes Agent wins
- Any model, any price. Hermes connects to whatever model you want: Kimi, DeepSeek, a ChatGPT subscription, or the free models on the Nous Portal. You can test the whole system cheaply or for nothing.
- More tools. Grok Bot's built-in apps are nice, but Hermes lets you decide what your agent can reach. Phone, email, social media, code: the integrations are there, and they are the reason the six use cases work.
- Flexibility for tinkerers. If you like to see how things work and customize them to your own needs, Hermes is the better operator. You own the setup.
- The pace of updates. The Hermes team ships constantly. The same week Grok Bot launched, they shipped their own bot interface, which I set up in a separate guide.
The trade-off is honest: for someone less technical, Hermes is more challenging to set up than Grok Bot.
My verdict
Grok Bot wins on easy setup and a friendly app. Hermes wins on flexibility and low cost. Grok Bot is pay to play, and you have to pay before you see a finished result. I already pay for enough subscriptions, and I am happy with what Hermes gives me, so I have not bought a SuperGrok plan and I am not sure I need one.
